Houston gymnastics on KAL spreads across the city: the Heights and the West 6th Street area near Shepherd, Gulfton and Stella Link near Bellaire, Meyerland on South Braeswood, Spring Branch on Blalock Road, the Memorial Drive and Katy Freeway corridor, Westchase near the Galleria, Clear Lake, and Hughes Road in southeast Houston. Ages start at 4 months for parent/child classes at The Little Gym. Some are small rec gyms. Others field USA Gymnastics and Xcel teams, and several add ninja, tumbling or cheer. Gyms in Katy, Spring, Pearland and other suburbs have their own pages.
How to Choose
Match the Class to Your Child’s Age
Starting ages vary a lot inside Houston. The Little Gym locations take babies from 4 months in parent/child classes, Houston Elite Gymnastics starts at 12 months, and Houston Gymnastics Academy at 20 months. Ask where the cutoff falls between the parent-and-me class and the drop-off class.
Decide Between Rec and Team
Recreational classes meet once or twice a week and teach skills without meets. Team gyms add tryouts, longer practices and travel. If competition might come later, pick a gym that runs a USA Gymnastics or Xcel team, so your child can move up without switching gyms.
Ask for the Full Monthly Cost
Tuition is only part of it. Houston Elite Gymnastics lists a $60 annual registration fee for one child on top of monthly tuition. Ask about registration, meet fees for team kids, and sibling discounts before you sign up.
Watch a Class Before Enrolling
Ask whether the gym offers a trial class or lets parents watch. Look at how many kids each coach handles, whether the little ones wait in long lines, and how the coach spots a new skill.
Check Drive Time at Rush Hour
Most weekday classes run late afternoon and early evening, right when I-10, 610 and the Beltway back up. A gym that looks close on a map can take twice as long at 5pm, so compare locations near your home or your child’s school.
FAQs
How Much Do Gymnastics Classes Cost in Houston?
Two Houston gyms post a monthly starting price, and the table shows those same figures: $95 and $132. Houston Elite Gymnastics starts at $95 a month for one preschool class a week, $105 for one rec or tumbling class, and $160 for two classes a week, plus a $60 yearly registration fee. The Little Gym of Houston-Bellaire lists $132 a month for one weekly class. Call the other gyms for current rates.
What Age Can a Child Start Gymnastics in Houston?
Some Houston gyms start in infancy. The Little Gym locations in the Heights, Bellaire and Memorial run parent/child classes from 4 months. Houston Elite Gymnastics begins at 12 months, Discover Gymnastics at 18 months and Houston Gymnastics Academy at 20 months. Most kids move into a drop-off preschool class around age 3, then into rec classes once they start school.
What Is the Difference Between Recreational and Competitive Gymnastics?
Rec gymnastics is a weekly class focused on skills and fun, with no meets. Competitive gymnasts train more hours a week, usually after a tryout or coach invite, and compete in USA Gymnastics levels or the Xcel program, which has more flexible skill rules and costs less. In Houston, H-Town Elite and RISE Gymnastics list USA Gymnastics or Xcel teams in our data, and Houston Gymnastics Academy has boys’ USA Gymnastics levels and a girls’ IGT program.
What Should My Child Wear to Gymnastics Class?
Girls usually wear a leotard, or fitted shorts with a T-shirt tucked in. Boys wear fitted shorts and a T-shirt. Kids train barefoot, so skip shoes and socks on the mat. Tie back long hair and leave jewelry at home, because it can catch on equipment. Bring a water bottle. Some Houston gyms set their own dress code, so check before the first class.
Do Houston Gyms Offer Trial Classes?
Many gyms let a new child try one class before paying for a full month, but KAL has not confirmed a trial policy for each Houston gym yet. Call or email before you go and ask whether the trial is free, which class level fits your child, and whether you need to register online first. Also ask if parents can stay and watch.
Are There Gymnastics Summer Camps in Houston?
Yes. Seven of the 14 Houston gyms on KAL list camps, including Houston Elite Gymnastics, Cypress Academy, RISE Gymnastics, Birons, Discover Gymnastics, Gymnastics Plus II and Lobo Gymnastics in Clear Lake. Lobo’s camps take potty-trained kids from 3 to 12, and a third-party listing showed a one-day camp at $65. Summer spots often fill early, so ask in spring.
Is Ninja or Tumbling the Same As Gymnastics?
No. Ninja classes are obstacle courses built around climbing, swinging and jumping, without the four Olympic events. Tumbling covers floor skills like rolls, handsprings and flips, often for cheer. Full gymnastics adds bars, beam and vault. In Houston, Houston Gymnastics Academy, Cypress Academy, RISE and Birons run ninja next to gymnastics, while one gym on Beverly Hill Street near the Galleria teaches tumbling only.
